The Best Day Trips from Madrid for Families with Children

One of the great advantages of living in Madrid is the density of heritage destinations reachable within two hours. Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, El Escorial, Aranjuez, Cuenca: all are perfect for a Saturday or Sunday with family. This guide covers the best options with practical information on how to get there, what to see, and how long to allow.

Toledo: the three-cultures city (1 hour)

Toledo is the classic Madrid day trip — and rightly so. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the medieval city has one of the densest concentrations of historic heritage in Spain.

How to get there: High-speed AVE from Atocha (33 minutes, recommended); car on the A-42 (1 hour); bus from Estación Sur (1 hour 15 minutes).

What to see: Toledo Cathedral (one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in Spain), the Alcázar (Army Museum with spectacular views), Iglesia de Santo Tomé (El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz), the Jewish quarter and Arab quarter.

Ávila has the most complete medieval wall in the world, almost intact after nine centuries. It is a small city that can be seen comfortably in a day.

How to get there: Train from Chamartín/Atocha (1 hour 30 minutes – 2 hours depending on service); car on the A-6 + N-110 (1 hour 30 minutes).

What to see: The walls (you can walk the rampart walkway), Ávila Cathedral, the Convent of Santa Teresa, the Basilica of San Vicente.

Cuenca: the hanging houses (2 hours)
